“What? Make an insect collection?” That 7th grade science class assignment sparked Ed’s interest in natural history and, eventually, art. Born in 1946 and raised in northern Ohio, Ed went on to earn a BS degree in biology from Bowling Green State University. (At that time, drawing was an expected part of biology laboratory classes.) Intrigued by marine biology, he then earned a MS degree in biological oceanography at the University of Hawaii. His adult life in Hawaii included exploring Oahu and the Big Island, before settling down on Maui. In the early 2000s, a summer break provided an opportunity to expand his artistic skills in the biological illustration class at Shoals Marine Laboratory on Appledore Island, Maine. After concluding classroom teaching, he has continued to experiment with different painting techniques and media – oils, watercolor, oil pastels, and soft pastels. His subjects are driven by local colors and tend to span the boundaries of realism and abstraction. Favorite Quote About My Work: “I really like your use of color and simple shapes. Reminds me of David Hockney.”
