John O'Leary
John O'Leary is a self-taught painter and photographer. After dabbling in multiple subjects, he found that photography, underwater photography in particular, was his calling. Using only a small camera, his tactic is to snorkel swim where colors and objects are magnified by the natural light near the surface. His goal with this technique is to capture amazing underwater scenes that are not easily duplicated or replicated on this small island. Originally from Illinois, John joined the Army and served 12 years in 9 states and 3 countries. John kept requesting Hawaii on his duty stations, but he kept getting East Coast locations as well as the Middle East. So finally, after his last tour, he moved to Maui on his own. Most days you can find John snorkeling at his favorite locations in Lahaina.
