Known as “The Volcano Knitter”, Lisa Louie is a long-time hand knitter who started making display art and unique wearables. “After a couple of decades in Hawaii, my ‘ohana on the mainland had more knitted sweaters than they knew what to do with, so I had to start making art," she says. Lisa’s knitted art has been in juried art shows, displayed in museums, and is available for purchase. Her unique work often features the landscape of Hawaii or incorporates societal issues. Recently, she completed a life size hand knit portrait of her husband in a bowling alley. “Waiting His Turn” was accepted into the Schaefer Portrait Challenge and Hawaii Craftsmen Fiber shows. The finished piece is 6'3" by 3'3”, took more than a year and a “lot of bad words” to complete.
